General Information About the Hearing

The Social Security Hearing Room

The hearing room in a Social Security case is much different than a traditional courtroom. Your hearing room will be small and informal and may contain some official signets such as the seal of the Social Security Administration or an American flag.

The hearing will be held around a conference table. Most hearing rooms will also be equipped with a judge’s table placed on a small riser slightly above the level of the conference table. There may also be a small desk for the judge’s assistant.

Even though the Social Security hearing room is nothing more than a small conference room, you may feel more comfortable if you are represented and seated next to a knowledgeable Tennessee disability lawyer.

The Recording Equipment

All Social Security rooms are equipped with audiotape recorders and microphones used to tape the hearing. As such, it is imperative that you speak clearly when answering questions. The microphones are extremely sound sensitive and will record your testimony from anywhere in the room as long as you speak loudly and clearly. But you should keep in mind that body language will not be recorded. So refrain from shaking your head or pointing to body parts in response to questions by your Tennessee disability lawyer. Simply remember to use your words in answering questions.

This type of set-up should help you relax on this big day. But the best peace of mind is the proper representation by an experienced lawyer.
